Ada Hayden Heritage Park Lake is a popular destination near Ames for outdoor pursuits. Amenities include paved parking, accessible fishing pier, paved trails, restrooms, pedestrian bridge and picnic area. A new ADA compliant canoe and kayak launch provides a safe and quick entry on the water. Catch largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish and hybrid striped bass. Rainbow trout are stocked in the north lake each fall and winter, may still be caught in spring and early summer.

Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park is nestled in the rolling landscape between Des Moines and Indianola. The area was once the site of a coal mine and now offers excellent boating and fishing. Blue Pit is in Lester Milligan Park on the southwest side of Mason City. The park was used for 90 years by the Brick and Tile Co. as a quarry for brick and clay tile products. Boone River from Briggs to Albright
For paddlers, the Briggs Woods Park put-in has nearby restrooms and boat rentals, along with camping and cabins. Fish for smallmouth bass, walleye. northern pike and catfish. Take out is a gravel ramp downstream of the bridge at Albrights Access, river left. 400cfs to 800cfs ideal flow.

Cedar Lake is two miles northeast of Winterset. The 1911 historic Jurgensen Bridge, once over the North River 9 miles east of Winterset, has been re-located to Cedar Lake and re-purposed with new decking, railing, lighting, landscaping and plaza area. Deep Lakes is a former sand and gravel quarry with more than 130 acres of clear water lakes surrounded by sand dunes. Des Moines River, Ledges State Park to E-57 Access (7.5 miles)
This lengthy scenic stretch is perfect for all skill levels and features catfish, walleye and striped bass. Interesting geology includes fossils and historic remains. The river starts to just creep along below 400cfs, so this level and above is ideal. Ledges State Park offers great hiking and picnicking.

Des Moines River, Prospect Park to Birdland Marina (3 miles)
This urban stretch of the wide Des Moines River can be paddled and fished even at fairly low levels. Several boat rental contacts are nearby. Look for catfish, walleye, smallmouth bass and more. Get out at Birdland Marina and have lunch at the riverside resturaunt. Do not go farther downstrream as there is a low-head dam just past the freeway overpass.

Lake Macbride is a popular outdoor destination with family-friendly recreation. Enjoy easy access to limestone shores, numerous fishing jetties and a handicapped accessible fishing pier connected via sidewalk to the parking lot. Lake Macbride is the only lake in Iowa where anglers can catch the prized Kentucky spotted bass. Kayak and canoe rentals are available at the beach at Lake Macbride State Park.

Middle Raccoon River, Lenon Mill Dam to P28 or Middle River Access (Linden) (2.1 or 5.2 miles)
The Middle Raccoon River is one of only five Protected Water Areas in Iowa. Discover great fishing and scenic beauty. Smallmouth bass and walleye are numerous. The trip can be extended to Linden and the river is a bit swifter than most in central Iowa. Look for levels between 400 and 800cfs but avoid higher levels. Several boat rental rentals can be found in the area.

This lazy and slow stretch of the West Nishnabotna provides great fishing for catfish. A boat rental livery is close to the ramp. Enjoy the historic Botna Bend Park at the put-in. You'll scrape if the water level is below 200cfs.
